Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Toolbox Talk

1. Your Lock = Your Life

Every worker must apply their own personal lock. LOTO prevents unexpected energization of equipment β€” it kills. Never rely on someone else's lock to protect you.

2. Never Remove Someone Else's Lock

Only the person who placed a lock may remove it. Removing another worker's lock is a serious violation β€” it puts their life at risk. If a lock must be removed in an emergency, follow your site's management override procedure.

3. Test for Zero Energy

After applying LOTO, always attempt to start the equipment to verify it is de-energized. Press buttons, try switches β€” confirm zero energy before touching any hazardous parts.

4. Release Stored Energy

Turning off a machine is not enough. Bleed pressure, discharge capacitors, block suspended parts, release spring tension. All stored energy must be neutralized before work begins.

5. Today's Discussion Questions

  1. Can you walk through the LOTO steps for a piece of equipment you work on?
  2. What do you do if you find a lockout device missing or bypassed?
