Today's Topic
PPE is your last line of defense; it doesn't remove the hazard β it reduces what gets to you; it only works if you wear it correctly.
Inspect Before Every Shift
- 30 seconds: check your hard hat (cracks, expiry)
- Glasses (scratches)
- Gloves (holes/tears)
- Boots (sole/toe)
- Hearing protection (foam plugs still expand?)
- Replace immediately if damaged
Common Mistakes
- Ball cap under hard hat
- Scratched safety glasses
- Foam earplugs barely inserted (roll, pull ear back, insert deep, hold 30 sec)
- Wrong glove for the hazard
Respirators & Rotating Equipment
- Respirators need a proper seal β beards break it
- NEVER wear gloves around rotating equipment (drill press, lathe) β the glove grabs and pulls your hand in
Today's Discussion Questions
- Does anyone need replacement PPE today?
- Is everyone wearing the correct PPE for their specific task right now?
